On June 13th, 2013, Microsoft released Windows Embedded Compact 2013.

Building on foundation from the previous version, the Compact 2013 development team made significant improvements for the following:

  • Platform Builder as Plug-in to Visual Studio 2012
  • Application Builder as Plug-in to Visual Studio 2012
  • Multiple Processor Support (SMP)
  • Improved Networking Throughput
  • Faster File System
  • Shorten Boot up time
  • Snapshot boot (similar to the Hibernate feature for desktop Windows Client OS)

With the updated Platform Builder and Application Builder (equivalent to the previous Smart Device extension) as plug-in to the Visual Studio 2012 IDE, this new development environment is much easier for Visual Studio developer to adopt and engage in developing application for Compact 2013 devices.

The Compact 2013 OS platform can help hardware and silicon vendors to gain new market.
