XAML for Windows Embedded (XWE) facilitates the development of rich graphical user interfaces with a native code backend. Because they are native code they have full access the OS API and are more efficient than managed code XAML applications. XAML which means eXtensible Application Markup Language, is an XML based markup language that is used to specify the components, layout and function of the application’s user interface.
XWE applications require the XAML for Windows Embedded runtime component with the XAML based Message Box being an optional component. These are in the Catalog under: Core OS/Windows Embedded Compact/Shell and User Interface/XAML for Windows Embedded
An XWE project will require one of the following OS Design Templates:
The XAML UI Device template adds the XAML Sample Home Screen and Default XAML Theme as well as the XAML Control Panel components. But these are not required to run XWE applications.
Note1: An XWE subproject will not build unless the OS has been built with the XAML runtime included.
Note2: XAML for Windows Embedded (Compact 2013) was formally Silverlight for Windows Embedded (Compact 7/CE 6)
