Development Environment
Whether you are a newbie or seasoned developer, to be effective and efficient, you need to establish a proper development with all of the required components to do your work.
To setup a proper Compact 2013 development environment, you need to have a general understanding about the overall development process. The diagram in figure 4.2 provides a visual view to show the Compact 2013 application development environment.

Here are some of the tasks to develop application for a Compact 2013 device:
1. Develop an OS design project from a development PC with VS 2012 and Platform Builder.
2. Build the OS design project to generate an OS runtime image (NK.bin) for the target device.
3. Download the NK.bin image to the target device.
4. Generate an SDK from the OS design project to support application development.
5. Install the SDK to a development PC with VS 2012 and Application Builder for Compact 2013. (This development PC can be the same PC used to develop the OS design from step 1.)
6. Develop application for the target device using the development PC in step 5.
7. Deploy the application to the target device with Compact 2013 OS running.
Note: The above steps are provided as an example. The actual development process and sequence can be different from the above and involve other tasks. The scenario in figure 4.2 assumes the BSP and associated device drivers for the target device are available, which is needed to develop the OS design.
Instead of using 2 separate development PCs, as shown in figure 4.2, to develop OS design and application. A single development PC can be used, with two instances of Visual Studio 2012 running, one for OS design development and the other for application development.
