Whether you are developing an OS design, application or device driver for an embedded device using Compact 2013, a target device is needed for testing and debugging the software components you are working on.

Many embedded device development projects involve a custom design device, which is not available to their software development team during the early stage of the development process.  To start working on software development tasks while the device for the project is not available yet, an alternative device built with similar hardware components can be used as the target device to support software development.  For some of the software components that are not hardware dependent, a virtual PC can be used as the target device.

To establish an environment to learn Compact 2013 development, a target device with Compact 2013 BSP is needed.

This chapter talks about target device hardware features needed to support Compact 2013 development, covering the following subjects:

·         Target device consideration.

·         Target device based on ARM processor.

·         Target device based on x86 processor.

·         Hyper-V VM and Virtual PC as target Device.

Note:              For the writing in this book, we refer to hardware platform and target device interchangeably.  Whether the writing is using the term “hardware platform”, “target device” or just “device”, it’s referring to the target device for Compact 2013 development.
