The Platform Builder standalone IDE has been the main development interface for the earlier versions of Windows Embedded Compact, for more than 10 years.  After the release of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 in September of 2006, many developers continue to use the Platform Builder standalone IDE to support existing projects that still use the earlier version.

While the standalone Platform Builder development IDE was gone since Windows Embedded CE 6.0, many Windows Embedded Compact developers, including member of Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Compact development team, still refer to Platform Builder as the development environment.  When searching for information resources relate to Windows Embedded Compact online, Platform Builder is one of the key terminology that is not likely to go away any time soon.
